Sigung’s “Application of Fighting” Seminar, 2005. Sigung is about to launch me — it’s like he suddenly gained 200 kg when he moved.
Sigung’s “Application of Fighting” Seminar, 2005 - Sigung is telling me I can do whatever I want to try to stop him and that it won’t matter. And he was right. Words can’t express the power hidden in that small frame.
Following the "Applications of Fighting" seminar, 2005 - Sigung was always super-friendly! He loved to laugh!
During my training under Grandmaster Jim Fung at the International Wing Chun Academy (IWCA), I was fortunate that Sigung would give five-hour seminars once a year. I attended 75 hours of seminars in three years! These seminars provided the theoretical foundation for my training at the IWCA.
Sigung was a master calligrapher and one night, on a whim, spent an hour or two writing short messages - this one which he gifted to me translates to:" Thought-Force Manifesting." I still have this precious gift.
Another friendly night at training, 2014. Such a great way to spend an evening - learning Wing Chun with good people.
Chinese New Year's celebration, 2014. We had a great party. First, we did some Wing Chun, and then we ate, then we went back to doing Wing Chun! A wonderful day!
Trip with Sigung and students to the Yip Man Memorial Museum in Fo Shan, China, 2014. Sigung was being honoured by the museum. The Fo Shan region is vital to the history of Wing Chun, and it was fascinating.
Mark Spence of the Chi Sau Club with some of his students on his regular visits to train with Sigung, 2013. It was great to catch up with old friends.
Another friendly night of training with the regular gwei-lo (foreigner) Wing Chun players, 2013. The best of men!
Sigung's birthday banquet, 2013. Hundreds of people came from all over the world to honour Sigung. I caught up with many Australian friends there. It was a wonderful evening!
Social lunch with Sigung and his wife, Si-por, 2013. On several occasions, I had the honour of going to lunch with Sigung and Sipo. On this occasion, I remember asking Sigung about athletic sprinting and brush calligraphy, and he had fascinating things to say about these topics.
Sigung’s adjustments were bespoke to each individual. Here he is opening up the joints in my arm, getting them to connect together and to my centre. This picture captures what it was like to train with Sigung. The photographer was the multitalented Albert Pui; thanks, Albert!
